Veneers

Dental veneers are the cosmetic dental treatment choice for those who want to improve the aesthetics of their smile quickly and efficiently. They are ideal for those with:

  • Crooked teeth
  • Chipped teeth
  • Discoloured teeth
  • Tooth gaps

Dental veneers act as thin 'shells' that are placed over worn teeth, and are proven to vastly improve the appearance of a smile. This is a popular treatment choice at our Oxfordshire dental veneer clinic, thanks in no small part to it being an excellent alternative to other treatments such as braces.

What is the procedure?

The dentist will firstly need to assess whether you are suitable for treatment. If you are, then treatment will typically involve the following steps:

  • A mild anaesthetic is issued to ensure you feel no discomfort.
  • Veneers require preparation of the teeth, which means that your teeth may need to be ‘shaved down’ so the veneer can be placed perfectly on your teeth.
  • The veneers are cemented in place and polished to make them shine.

Treatment time will vary depending on how many veneers are needed.

Dental veneers often come in two different materials:

  • Porcelain – The more expensive material of the two, but also the longer lasting and aesthetically pleasing. Porcelain is a strong, durable material and has been proven to last up to 5-10 years, as long as you take proper care of your teeth.

  • Composite resin – Ideally this material is used to fix small chips and not as successful as porcelain veneers. However, this form of veneer is cheaper and can last a long time if you take care of your teeth, but they don’t have the aesthetic appeal of porcelain veneers.

What are the advantages of veneers?

  • Veneers can last a long time as long as you take proper care of your teeth.
  • Veneers will make your teeth look whiter, brighter and brand new instantaneously.

What are the disadvantages of veneers?

  • Veneers can be costly.
  • During the procedure you will likely have your teeth shaved to fit the veneer.
